Who we are
In Hamburg, there is a long tradition of consolidating and representing small business interests in the implementation of environmental legislation. In close cooperation with the Authority for Urban Development and Environmental Affairs (BSU), the chambers and the affected trade associations, the FHE Entsor-
gungsverband (waste disposal for commercial enterprises) and the ENH Entsorgungsverband (waste disposal for small trade enterprises) were founded in the years 1997 and 1998.

Against this background, in 2003 we spoke with the chambers, the affected trade associations and the Authority for Urban Development and Environmental Affairs about implementing the planned Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act together.

It became apparent early on that the considerations of importers and of small and medium-sized manufacturers of electric appliances in particular would hardly be taken into consideration in the implementation of the law. Fulfilment of the obligations under the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act would call for extensive knowledge of the legal regulations and the related administrative regulations.

As a consequence, the Verband zur Rücknahme und Verwertung von Elektro- und Elektronik-
Altgeräten e.V.
(Association for the Return and Reuse of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), in the following called VERE, was founded in November 2003. Mr Oliver Friedrichs and Mr Jochen Stepp were elected to the executive board, both of whom possess extensive experience in the field of electronic waste disposal.

The steady rise in member numbers demonstrates how important the work of the association is. Today, VERE has over 1,300 members, who are informed by the association about the latest developments and whose interests are represented by it. With approximately 3 billion euro annual turnover and approximately 12,000 employees, these members represent a substantial part of the German electrical industry. The association represents more than one third of all manufacturers registered with the EAR in the B2C sector.

The headquarters and offices of VERE are located in Hamburg.
